KYIV. April 21. UNN. In Ukraine, the first patients received treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at state expense. At the end of last year, the Law of Ukraine on managed access contracts was adopted, which allowed the purchase of drugs at a reduced price. At the end of the year, Medical Procurement of Ukraine for the first time purchased expensive medicines for patients suffering from a rare disease – spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

“Children from Khmelnytskyi and Chernivtsi regions, in which SMA of the first type was detected, have already received treatment with an innovative drug purchased by the Medical Procurement of Ukraine at the expense of the state budget under the mechanism of managed access contracts. The course of treatment is ongoing, and this gives prospects for alleviating or eliminating the symptoms of the disease.” – reports the Ministry of Health.
SMA was detected thanks to the implementation of extended neonatal screening – a comprehensive examination of newborns aimed at detecting hereditary (genetic) and congenital diseases, which has started working in Ukraine.
Since autumn, newborn babies are checked for 21 rare diseases free of charge. Early diagnosis of such diseases allows treatment of children to begin as early as possible – even before symptoms appear – this is what ensures effective treatment.
“During this time, more than 51,000 studies were conducted on the basis of regional neonatal screening centers, of which more than 28,000 were carried out by the Lviv regional center and about 23,000 by the Kyiv regional center. These are modern high-tech laboratories equipped with special state-of-the-art equipment and laboratory information systems. 73 positive results have been confirmed,” said the Ministry of Health.
