In the last few hours it became known that Twitter suppressed the controversial labels of ‘state-affiliated media’ and ‘government-funded media’ hitherto applied to numerous media accounts.

The measure had been applied to large media accounts both in the West and in China, Russia and other countries, but at this time they no longer have the label.

Among them were the accounts of the United States Public Radio (NPR), the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, the Russian RT, the Canadian CBC and the Spanish RTVE.

This hashtag has long been attached to accounts linked to state media or government officials, especially from China and Russia.

The social network maintained that this rule it applied to entities that “are the official voice of a State abroad” and for the moment it has not ruled on the decision to withdraw these labels.

However, the platform, acquired by billionaire Elon Musk last year, recently changed its policy and began assigning that label to media outlets that receive public funding, even though they are not controlled by any government.

In response, some outlets had stopped using Twitter or threatened to leave the social network.
