Marburg fever outbreak in Equatorial Guinea worries WHO

This virus from the same family as Ebola seems to be spreading uncontrollably in this small central African country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely monitoring the Marburg fever epidemic that has been raging in Equatorial Guinea since February 13. The Marburg virus, belonging like Ebola to the family of filoviruses (filamentous viruses), causes severe hemorrhagic fevers which can be fatal. The official count to date is 16 cases confirmed by laboratory analysis, including 11 deaths, and 23 suspected cases. The virus is present in four provinces of this small central African country which is affected for the first time in its history. Patients have been diagnosed in particular in Bata, the most populous city in the country, which hosts an airport and an international port.
