  • Through its wastewater treatment plant, Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico saves more than 29 million liters of water per year, which is equivalent to 13 pipes a day.
  • Therefore, the pharmaceutical company made history by obtaining AWS certification.

All companies that participate in the field of health fulfill a fundamental function and the highest priority is always the well-being of people. At the same time, it cannot be overlooked that there are also other aspects in which they can venture to demonstrate their social responsibility. With this in mind, now is the time to meet the pharmaceutical company in Mexico that achieved the certification granted by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS).

In this case we refer to Boehringer Ingelheim México, which obtained this recognition for sustainable water management. With this she became the first pharmacist in the world to achieve this recognition. To achieve this, it was essential to carry out actions focused on contributing to the Restoration of the Valley of Mexico Basin and ensure the good quality of the resource, as well as promote its sustainable use in the company’s facilities.

The problem of water scarcity in the world

The sustainable use of this vital resource takes on great relevance when considering the current panorama that exists on the planet. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in four health care centers lacks water services.

Although that is not because it is calculated that one in three does not have access to hand hygiene in places where patient care is provided. While one in 10 does not have sanitation services and one in three does not separate waste safely.

In line with the objective of reducing its water footprint in the communities where it operates, the German pharmaceutical company that, for 50 years, has been producing medicines for human health through two manufacturing sites in Xochimilco, has launched different projects. The objective is to have an efficient management of this resource as is the operation of the wastewater treatment plant. The result is a savings of more than 29 million liters per year.

“The treated water is reincorporated responsibly in certain processes of the complex, such as the irrigation of the four hectares of green areas that allow animal species, such as squirrels and herons, to find refuge,” explained Marcela Gutiérrez, Safety, Hygiene and Environment Manager at Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico.

Pharmaceutical company obtains AWS certification

As part of the company’s commitment to the sustainable use of water, during 2022 collaborations and volunteering were carried out with organizations that seek to restore the environment through the implementation of innovative water solutions. In the end all the efforts helped so that the pharmacist became AWS certified.

This work is part of a global strategy that seeks to achieve a better future for the generations to come and that has been called Sustainable Development for Generations. It is divided into three pillars: More Health, More Potential and More Green, through which it seeks to achieve sustainable change.
