His club L’Élan Chalon (Pro B) announced it on Friday. Mickaël Gelabale, who will turn 40 on May 22, will not play again this season. The former winger for the France team (156 caps) suffered a stroke on Monday April 17 during training. A few days earlier, he had been decisive by scoring two decisive three-point shots against Saint-Quentin (68-64).

“During Monday morning’s session, I felt such symptoms that I was taken to the emergency room of Chalon hospital. The MRI then detected a stroke. Fortunately caught in time, I was treated immediately and underwent additional examinations in the intensive care unit and then in neurology. Today, I am pleased to announce that I am back home, ”he explains in a press release.

“This does not exclude a return to the courts when I am allowed to do so”

Returned home after the exams, the player trained in Cholet, then passed through Spain, Russia, Belgium, Croatia, the NBA at the Seattle SuperSonics, Asvel, Strasbourg, Limoges or even Le Mans will have to start a period of rest. But he still hopes to play basketball again. “However, I will have to rest for several weeks before resuming a professional activity and unfortunately will not be able to return for the end of the season, he also writes. I have good hope that the medical will gradually subside, which therefore does not exclude a return to the courts when I am allowed to do so. »

Gelabale, 2013 European champion and bronze medalist at the 2014 World Cup with France, has been playing for Chalon since the 2017-2018 season.
