Putting a sprinter and a vueltomaniac on the same team for a Grand Tour is an experiment that usually doesn’t go well. For this reason, Elia Viviani will not be part of the next Giro d’Italia, where his team, INEOS Grenadiers, attends with obligations for the general classification.
“I won’t do the Giro because the whole team will support Geraint Thomas,” the 34-year-old sprinter confirmed a few days ago to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Skipping the Giro was planned from the beginning of the season, but in my heart I have always hoped for a change of program,” lamented the man who has won 5 sets in the home round.
Hardly logical decision, because for the model that the British require, it does not fit to fight for the flat stages. They must form a climbing block, with alternatives and solidity, either to support the 36-year-old Welshman or other emerging assets such as Tao Geoghegan Hart -who is flying in the Alps-, Thymen Arensman or Pavel Sivakov.
