The Minister of the Living Environment and Transport, in charge of Sustainable Development (MCVTDD), José TONATO, launched on Monday April 17, 2023, the workshop relating to the second edition of the national dialogue for the internalization of policies and strategies for the mobilization of resources on the 8th round of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8). It was at Azalaï Hotel in Cotonou.

During the ceremony, the Minister expressed his deep gratitude to all the institutions, in particular those of the GEF, whose financial and technical support made it possible to stimulate a positive dynamic simultaneously at the State level. and civil organizations. This dynamic is identified with the realization of several impact projects in line with PAGs 1 and 2 in terms of climate change, biodiversity and the restoration of degraded lands as well as the development of alternative income-generating measures. On behalf of President Patrice TALON, Minister TONATO assured the government’s determination to make the GEF an instrument for mobilizing financial resources in the field of the environment, with a view to gradually consolidating resilience to climate change and solving the fundamental issues in this area. The Minister hoped that at the end of this meeting, the actors at the national level could have training likely to help them build consensus and synergy on the national priorities identified for GEF 8 and increase their mobilization capacities. the resources available from the various windows of the fund, with more proven mastery of GEF procedures.

Sow IBRAHIM, the representative of the GEF Africa Secretariat praised the government’s sensitivity to environmental challenges and welcomed the respectable efforts made by Benin in the search for national resources in relation to sustainable management. According to him, the assistance of the GEF for the performance of the dialogue, is a privilege. Indeed, for GEF 8, Benin’s star allocation has increased to $12.63 million. In addition, Benin is eligible to receive funding from the fund for payments up to $20 million. The operational focal point of the GEF Benin, Mémanton BONI YALLA, considered, for his part, that the present meeting is a session of coaching and preparation for obtaining a maximum of financial resources from the GEF for the benefit of Benin.

As a reminder, the objective of the national dialogue is to build the capacities of all the national actors involved in the implementation of the actions of the Global Environment Facility for a better internalization of the new strategies and policies in force during the 8th cycle of the EMF.
