The North Jutland Museum (Denmark) revealed on Thursday that two Viking treasures were found in the northwest of the country. The precious objects were discovered last fall near the remains of a fortress. A young girl equipped with a metal detector made this find in a cornfield. She was taking part in a search operation mobilizing several people. The discoverer will receive financial compensation.

A “very rare” find

The two treasures were only a few meters apart. In particular, they contain some 300 old silver coins from Danish, Arab and Germanic civilizations, among others. The inscriptions they contain have led experts to say that they date back to the 980s. Part of a 500 ga jewel has also been unearthed. The museum director described the loot as “very rare”.

Danish coins, in particular, were minted in very limited quantities during the time of King Harald at the Blue Tooth, he said. They could help specialists to deepen their knowledge of the history of the Vikings. Excavations will continue on the site, with the aim of unearthing the remains of tombs or dwellings. The objects discovered will be visible at the North Jutland Museum from July 1st.
