The The first environmental demonstration in history was held on April 22, 1970. in United States. This historic episode was followed by more than 20 million people and marked the origin of the Mother Earth Day on an international level.

International Earth Day is celebrated because from the United Nations Organization (UN) it is about educate the entire global population of the problems that exist in the environment, the vast majority caused by human action.

Main environmental problems that currently exist are climate change, deforestation, drought, the abusive consumption of resources, the contamination of aquifers and the reduction of biodiversity. These ecological disasters put the conservation of the planet at risk.

One of the main objectives of this Earth Day is to sensitize all citizens about these environmental problems and promote sustainable development that involves a balance between economic, social and environmental needs.

Ecology —the relationship between human beings and the environment they inhabit— is experiencing a crisis situation. Many ecosystems on the planet are in danger and the UN created the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). This is its second year of operation and this initiative was created to prevent, stop and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on all continents and also in the oceans. Among the projects to which special attention is given are the recovery of the Ganges river, the restoration of the Abu Dhabi Marina or that of the small island states.

To respect and care for Mother Earth is to respect and care for human beings because any change in the environment directly affects the health of citizens. Air pollution causes respiratory problems, skin and allergies of all kinds. Deforestation and drought are responsible for the famine that is suffered in many areas of the planet. As well as the increase in infectious diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans due to ecological imbalance.

The United Nations Environment Program stated that every four months a new infectious disease, being 75% of them transmitted from animals to humans. One of the most recent examples is the 2020 pandemic, caused by COVID-19.

So that a similar pandemic does not happen again and to curb the impact of all environmental problems, it is essential to celebrate Mother Earth Day and raise awareness so that the planet is cared for and respected.
