Futuro Vegetal activists have once again throwing biodegradable red and black paint at a bank branch using fire extinguishers. A spokeswoman for the collective has claimed the need to stop farming to feed cattle (70% of the cultivated land) and use it for renaturation and reforestation, recovering forest mass as a carbon sink and biodiversity shelter.

Futuro Vegetal demands an agri-food model that “promotes socially and ecologically responsible alternatives based on plants to face the necessary change of agri-food system”, according to the movement, echoing the reports of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This action coincides with the same week in which it has been revealed that The meat industry has lowered the recommendations in the final report of the IPCC regarding the transition of the agri-food model.

The livestock industry is one of the main responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water pollution and drought. Last year, the Spanish state suffered one of the three years with the greatest water stress in the last sixty years and the trend, always according to United Nations reports, is that the situation will worsen if we do not take radical measures.

Spanish banks, the ones that allocate the most funds to the livestock sector

Santander, CaixaBank and BBVAson The Spanish banks that allocate the most funds to the livestock sector through loans. “We cannot allow industries that continue to be financed jeopardize the food security of the population“, proclaimed one of the demonstrators at the end of the action. “The large corporations, banks and governments are actively collaborating in an imminent genocide”, exclaimed another of the participants.

Futuro Vegetal demands the government to act accordingly with the seriousness of the crisis, taking measures aimed at a transition of the agri-food system that protects the rural world, the environment and animals. The collective proposes to invest the subsidies in redistributing production towards the local, generating jobs in the field and promoting food sovereignty. The activists call on the entire population to rise up against the dynamics that are dragging us to the precipice of Ecosocial Collapse. “We cannot depend on the will of corporations or the inaction of governments, we need to be the change. It is a matter of life or death ”, could be read on the collective’s Twitter.
