The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) is much more than the base of public health in the country. At the same time, it is necessary to remember that Social Security is celebrating its 80th anniversary. It was created in 1943 by decree of then President Manuel Ávila Camacho. Therefore, during all this time it has faced everything from wars and natural disasters to pandemics and economic crises.

In the same way, throughout its 80 years it has managed to gather an important cultural heritage. With this in mind, in the Exhibition Hall of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs of murals and monumental reliefs by renowned artists such as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jorge Camarena or Federico Cantú.

These heritage works of the Institute are found in clinics, hospitals, social service units and administrative offices.

The exhibition “The Cultural Heritage of the IMSS” will be mounted until June 30. Attendees will also be able to appreciate different collections of objects of cultural value such as works of art, historical documents, specimens of traditional ethnobotany and scenic costumes.

The most important medicinal herbarium in Mexico

Specimens of the most important collection of medicinal plants that exists in the Social Security Medicinal Herbarium are also appreciated. It is one of the most important in Latin America and the first in Mexico because it dates from 1552.

In this exhibition there are also documents, publications, photographs and books that for eight decades have been kept in the Unique Information Center and Historical Archive “Ignacio García Téllez”.

In this regard, the head of the Social Welfare Coordination, María Magdalena Castro Onofre, said that this exhibition allows us to appreciate part of the history of the IMSS “from one of the facets less known by most people, which is the promotion of art and culture”.

The labor capacity of the IMSS

To care for this entire population, there is a health team made up of 146 thousand nurses and nurses and more than 84 thousand doctors and doctors. In addition, an average of 832 deliveries, 2,852 surgeries, 710,350 clinical analyses, 50,768 radiodiagnostic studies, 11,338 echosonography, 6,668 tomography, 237 cardiopulmonary physiology, and 901 magnetic resonance are attended. In addition, 15,401 sessions of Inhalation Therapy, 1,844 of Radiotherapy, 7,529 of Hemodialysis, 21,215 of Physical Medicine and 1,488 of Nuclear Medicine, among others.
