Metapan, Santa Ana. Located in the city of Metapán, department of Santa Ana, the Montecristo National Park is located about 117 km. of San Salvador.
Montecristo is a cloudy forest declared a National Park in 1987, this being the first area in El Salvador to receive such recognition; It has a beautiful place known as “The Garden of 100 Years” in which it hosts more than 70 species of orchids from all over the country.
It is also home to animal species such as toucans, anteaters, lizard snakes, white-tailed deer, cotuzas, margays, pumas, and spider monkeys. This misty forest continues to be a sanctuary for the flora and fauna of the area, which is why it is one of the country’s natural treasures.
Montecristo is part of the Trifinio-Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, between Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and is located at 2,418 meters above sea level; its temperatures remain between 6 and 18 degrees Celsius.
Because it is a natural environment, it is a perfect place for ecotourism, in which visitors can carry out activities that allow them to enjoy nature. Starting from this, the park offers tourists three camping areas with picnic tables and two family cabins, walks on the three interpretive trails accompanied by a specialized guide to enjoy all the flora and fauna of the place, soccer field, visits to viewpoints and general tourism areas.
