Spain removes fascist Primo de Rivera from Mausoleum Madrid

The relocation of Primo de Rivera’s grave follows the removal in 2019 of Franco’s own remains. Monday’s operation is part of a plan to turn the so-called Valley of the Fallen, which Franco ordered, into a memorial to those who died during Spain’s civil war between 1936 and 1939. Also some 34,000 victims of that civil war are buried there.

Last year the valley got its original name back: Cuelgamuros. The removal of Primo de Rivera is another step in giving a new meaning to the valley, Spanish minister Félix Bolaños said on Friday. “No person or ideology that promotes dictatorship should be honored or glorified.”
