The Bundesliga has to be exciting – otherwise nobody will be tuning in soon.

Up to three billion euros beckon to German club football if the DFL’s investment plans come true. What happens to the fresh money then? The interests could not be more contradictory.

NThe protests that took place two weeks ago in the curves of the Bundesliga stadiums did not have a lasting effect. What was to be expected is clear: Some organized fans are against the sale of shares to a yet to be founded subsidiary of the German Football League (DFL), to which national and international media rights are to be outsourced.

The sale of probably 12.5 percent of this company should flush 2.5 to three billion euros into German club football, now banners with messages like “You are speculating on the future of the league” could be read. For example, the investor receives “no right of co-determination,” says DFL executive spokesman Hans-Joachim Watzke. The cooperation should end automatically after 20 to 25 years, the investment is not comparable to the activities of any Gulf states or billionaires who buy clubs and intervene in the operative business.
