The number of asylum applications in Austria fell in the first quarter. According to current figures from the Interior Ministry, 10,167 applications were made. In the same period of the previous year, it was eleven percent more. Around three quarters of the applicants were men. The strongest group of origin were Syrians, followed by Moroccans and Afghans.

Although Moroccans came to Austria unusually often this year, they have almost no chance of asylum. In the first three months, 0.1 percent of Moroccan cases were decided positively. Only one Indian received asylum. Despite the end of visa-freedom in Serbia, citizens of this country still take fifth place in the application statistics, but the trend is clearly falling. For comparison: 62 percent of Syrian applications are approved.

A total of 3,644 people received asylum in the first quarter. In addition, 1,797 refugees were granted subsidiary protection. 451 people received humanitarian residence permits. 2,669 negative decisions were made in summary and expedited procedures. In addition, around 13,000 people had avoided the procedure by the end of March and left Austria again on their own.

The numbers in basic care are still high, with more than 87,000 occupied places at the beginning of April. Of course, the numbers in the previous year were even higher, at up to 93,000. 60 percent of those in primary care are Ukrainian citizens displaced by Russian aggression.
