IN IMAGES – In Pas-de-Calais, Brittany, Alsace, Auvergne and as far as Toulouse, astronomy enthusiasts were able to observe and photograph the phenomenon, two months after its last appearance.
During the night of Sunday to Monday, the weather conditions favorable to these luminous outbreaks were met, to the delight of amateurs. The voice of the North has identified different places of appearance reported on the internet: from the North to the Vendée, via the Deux-Alpes and the north of Toulouse. France 3 reported a similar sight in Alsace.
As explained recently to Figaro Didier Schreiner, director of the planetarium of Douai, this phenomenon, if it is rare, “nothing abnormal or disturbing. It is linked to the activity of the sun, which increases and decreases according to cycles which are renewed every 11 years. During the previous peak, in 2015, the aurora borealis had already been observed in France. (…) What is exceptional, on the other hand, is that the phenomenon is clearly marked when the sun is not currently at its maximum activity.The specialist added that “the higher you go in latitude, the more likely you are to see the aurora borealis. In other words, it is better to be in the north than in the south of France. This is why regions close to the poles, such as Lapland, are traditionally those which offer the best conditions. They can be observed with the naked eye without any danger.»
Despite the cloudy sky, which affects the ideal observation of the aurora borealis, several Internet users were able to share their photos on Twitter and Facebook, and tell “the appearancewhich they attended.

Amateur photographers underline the beauty of the spectacle which pierces the sky despite the light pollution. In a “timelapse», the astrophotographer Louis Leroux offers an accelerated vision of the phenomenon which appeared yesterday at the start of the evening.
The French association Infoclimat has received many photographs from meteorology enthusiasts.
According to several of them, the phenomenon was stronger tonight than two months ago.
