In recent months, the right and access to abortion have been seriously threatened in the United States. With the repeal of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 by the Supreme Court, thirteen states had the possibility of prohibiting abortion on their territory.

A federal judge in Texas also recently tried to suspend the sale of mifepristone, a widely used abortion pill in the country. Fortunately, the decision was blocked on Friday by the Supreme Court. At the same time, several democratic states have decided to mobilize to guarantee access to voluntary termination of pregnancy for their inhabitants.

Five years of stock in New York State

Several states have thus begun to build up a stockpile of abortion pills, mainly mifepristone and misoprostol, reports the Guardian relayed by Slate. In Massachusetts, the government has mandated the University to purchase 15,000 doses of mifepristone, thus guaranteeing a year’s supply of abortion pills.

“Mifepristone has been used safely for more than 20 years and is the gold standard,” said Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. “We are not going to let an extremist Texas judge reverse this proven drug and restrict access to care in our state. »

In California, two million pills have been purchased and New York State has ordered 150,000 doses of misoprostol, a five-year supply. Other states such as Maryland or Oregon have also taken the lead in building up stocks in advance of these drugs.
