Russia officially withdrew from the Open Skies Treaty – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Russia on December 18 officially withdrew from the Open Skies Treaty (OON) and suspended the fulfillment of its obligations under this agreement.

In November 2020, the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that Moscow was not complying with the terms of the agreement, after which the United States withdrew from the Don. The American side was dissatisfied with the restrictions on flights over Chechnya and in the Kaliningrad region.

Moscow denied the accusations and put forward counterclaims to Washington concerning, for example, flights over the Hawaiian Islands. At the time, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that it was Washington and its allies who did not comply with the agreement. And Russia, “despite numerous violations,” did everything possible to preserve the agreement.

The Open Skies Treaty was signed in March 1992. The agreement has been ratified by 32 countries. They allowed other DON members to make observation flights over their territory using photo and video filming.
