According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of new cases of cancer in Mexico will increase by 65 percent per year by the year 2040, so it is absolutely necessary to report on this condition.

As Max Saráchaga, medical director of Amgen Mexico, explained, “the annual increase in cancer cases in Mexico is worrying and we must continue to raise awareness about this condition to increase its detection and timely treatment.”

Breast cancer is the deadliest in Mexico

In February, specifically on the 4th, World Cancer Day is celebrated and this executive recalled that, in 2020, this disease caused more than 90,000 deaths and exceeded 195,000 new cases in Mexico. According to the WHO, breast cancer persists as the deadliest in this country, since during 2020 it claimed the lives of more than 7,000 people and was the cancer that caused the most new cases, with more than 29,000.

Meanwhile, lung cancer accounted for more than 7,000 deaths in Mexico, while more than 1.7 million deaths were reported in the world that year. In addition, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that cancer ranked as the fourth cause of death in the country in 2021, with 8.3 percent of all deaths.

Patients can improve their quality of life with state-of-the-art treatments

However, it was also pointed out that, thanks to an adequate diagnosis and innovative and state-of-the-art treatments, “patients can improve their quality of life”.

In addition, it has been remembered that breast cancer can develop in both men and women, although it is more frequent in them. However, campaigns to raise awareness about the disease and advances in diagnosis and treatment have raised survival rates, since currently in Latin America 90 percent of women with breast cancer have a 5-year survival and 83 percent of 10 years.
