Pupils of the 12th grade began to take state exams, which complete secondary education. The first was the exam in Estonian as a mother tongue, which took place on 24 April. The next day, students from Russian-language schools will take Estonian. The examination period will last until May 17.

First exam – in Estonian
In Narva, Estonian as a native language is taught in two classes at municipal schools – one at the Vanalinna State School, which runs a language immersion program, and one at the Narva Estonian Gymnasium, where all instruction is in Estonian.

Most Narva graduates take the Estonian as a second language exam, which takes place on Tuesday 24 April.
In addition to pupils from municipal schools, the state examinations are also taken by those pupils of the Ida-Viru Vocational Education Center who receive secondary specialized education. This year, no one took Estonian as a native language in the Narva department of the center, the exam was held on Monday in the Jõhvi department. And on Tuesday, said Tatyana Burikova from the vocational education center, 105 pupils in Narva will take the exam – simultaneously with high school students and using the same materials.

The minister addressed the students
On both Monday and Tuesday, exams all over Estonia start at the same time at 10 am with a radio speech by the new Minister of Education, Christina Kallas.

“This is certainly not the last effort or the last exploration of your life. The world around us is changing so fast that the need to adapt and learn or relearn is only increasing. I hope you still have enough curiosity and joy of learning to continue with renewed vigor at a university, vocational training center or on your own, as needed. Your generation has many opportunities for this in Estonia and around the world,” said Kristina Kallas in particular.

She emphasized that current graduates will especially need critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and also noted that they will, in fact, need to study all their lives.

The Minister also recalled that in recent years, the pandemic and “remote work” have prevented schoolchildren from studying, but urged them to perceive them as preparation for future work:

“Future projections are that you will change jobs at least three times in your lifetime, and the hybrid workplace will become the norm rather than the exception for many.”

Two languages and mathematics
In addition to the Estonian language, graduates of the basic school will have to pass an exam in English or another foreign language that was taught as part of the curriculum on May 2. The last one will be the math exam, which will take place on May 17th.
For those who, for any reason, could not take the exams together with everyone on the set days, there are spare days for passing the state exam.

According to Postimees, the results of the exams will be known no later than June 18, including the graduates will be able to find them on the state portal eesti.ee.
