Still much to discover

We already know many disease-fighting properties of nutrients. But you can safely assume that they have many more advantages: we just have to discover them. About ten to twenty years ago very little was known about this. So we are pretty sure that many more discoveries will be made in this field in the coming decades.

Most disease-fighting nutrients are unstable: they break down quickly. This makes it difficult to produce them as a supplement or medicine. But in our food they work perfectly. The best thing to do is to make sure you get some of them with every meal.

And note: the effects are reversible. So if you stop eating, you lose the protection. As noted earlier, we also know that these nutrients work synergistically: they reinforce each other. So the more different fabrics, the better.

For example, EGCG (a polyphenol in green tea) or curcumin (in turmeric) cannot kill cancer cells on their own. But if you combine them, they do. Another example is that curcumin is poorly absorbed by your body. But as soon as you add piperine (from black pepper), the absorption increases a thousand times. And when you consider that herbs have the highest concentrations of antioxidants of all foods…

Killing cancer cells

There are a few undisputed toppers in the plant world. Mushrooms (particularly oyster mushrooms) are number 1. In animals, they stop cancer growth and shrink tumors. Medicinal mushrooms are therefore often used in the treatment of cancer in Japan and other Asian countries.

Urologist Sensuke Konno of the New York Medical Center found that maitake mushrooms (or egg bun) in combination with vitamin C were very effective in killing cancer cells.

They were also found to reduce the growth of cancer cells in cell cultures by 90 percent. Research has also been done on the effect of maitake extract in patients with advanced cancer: it caused a significant improvement in 74 percent of people with breast cancer.

This was 67 percent for lung cancer and 47 percent for liver cancer.12 Countless other bioactive compounds from different types of mushrooms have been shown in the laboratory to kill cancer cells. 13 From other studies, we know that lentinan extract from shiitake mushrooms increases survival, increases cancer cell death, and reduces the risk of recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) In more than 700 Japanese hospitals, they use active hexose correlated compound (AHCC): a shiitake based product.

Clinical studies have been done on this extract and it has been shown to greatly increase survival rates in many types of cancer. For example, survival time in advanced liver cancer is doubled by AHCC. There is another product based on shiitake mushrooms: MGN supplements could inhibit tumor growth.

There are dozens of anecdotal accounts of people recovering from cancer, including metastatic cancer. But studies in large groups of people are needed to test whether these supplements work and are safe.15

We now know for sure that fruit and vegetables can prevent cancer. We have already identified many nutrients that fight cancer and we also understand how they work: how they block different stages of the cancer process. They are likely to be useful in many other chronic diseases as well.

The logic of why they work has been established by research. Therefore, those studies justify cancer treatments that use these foods as medicine, such as the Gerson method. It is high time to rethink the ability of nutrition to both prevent and cure disease.

The methods used by Gerson and Kelley are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Imagine how much progress we can make in the fight against cancer if we make these methods standard, in addition to regular treatments.
