KYIV. April 25. UNN. North Dakota has passed one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country. Republican Gov. Doug Burgum signed legislation banning the procedure throughout pregnancy, with few exceptions up to six weeks into pregnancy. AR writes about it, passes it on UNN.

Details

The law, according to which the performance of an abortion by a doctor is a criminal offense, provides for other exceptions, including to save the life of the mother or in cases where her health is in serious danger. But rape and incest victims would have to carry their pregnancies to term, as long as the “probable gestational age of the unborn child is six weeks or less,” Senate Bill 2150 says.

The bill passed both houses of North Dakota’s legislature with veto-proof majorities and is the latest to pass in the Republican-led state since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down federal abortion rights last year, allowing states to impose restrictions.

There are no abortion clinics in North Dakota. Last summer, the state’s only facility, the Red River Women’s Clinic, closed its doors and moved operations to Minnesota, where abortion remains legal. A clinic owner is still fighting a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of North Dakota’s previous abortion ban.

Addition

Last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision, which overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision to legalize abortion nationwide, led to several states passing laws that ban or restrict the procedure. At least 13 states currently ban abortions at all stages of pregnancy, with others suspended due to court injunctions.

On the other hand, Democratic governors in at least 20 states this year launched a network designed to expand access to abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that struck down women’s constitutional right to abortion and transferred regulatory authority over the procedure to state governments.
