Anyone who wants to become one of the asparagus self-sufficient learners quickly: It’s complicated – and in big cities like Frankfurt it’s anything but cost-saving. Because the vegetables need a lot of space.

LYou can hear them all over the country: extravagant hymns of praise for the “Asparagus officinalis”. What is meant is the vegetable asparagus – one of the last real seasonal vegetables. Asparagus is not always available and is one of the great constants in the world of vegetables. The asparagus is much more than just an integral part of the German diet. He’s like a good friend: always comes to visit on time in the spring, then says goodbye – only to show up again next year. He’s part of the family, so to speak – and that’s how people talk about him. Its delicate aroma, elegant bitter-sweet taste and low calorie content are praised year after year as a reason to justify excessive consumption during the season from April 5th to June 24th, “St. John’s Day”.

And it’s true: the stick vegetables contain hardly any calories. According to the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, there are only 21 kilocalories per 100 grams. The fact that the asparagus is always accompanied in large quantities, be it melted butter or hollandaise sauce, is gallantly concealed.
