Many women who repeatedly have to deal with urinary tract infections drink cranberry juice as a preventive measure. Whether that really helps has long been a matter of debate. A high-quality Cochrane review now shows that the prophylactic use of cranberry products in susceptible people and after medical procedures can prevent around half of such infections.

Results from 50 studies with almost 9000 participants show that cranberry juice and supplements reduce the risk of recurring UTIs: by more than a quarter in women, by more than half in children and after medical procedures, which make it particularly susceptible to um about 53 percent.

“Back in 1973, my mother was told to try cranberry juice to help prevent her frequent UTIs. That helped her a lot. At first she drank the sour juice every day, later she took capsules. As soon as she stopped, the symptoms returned. As so often happens, it turns out that mom was right! Ultimately, the truth will emerge as more and better study results emerge. Urinary tract infections are distressing and very common; It affects about a third of women, as do many older people, and also people with bladder problems due to spinal cord injuries or other conditions,” said Dr. Gabrielle Williams from Flinders University in Adelaide.

If left untreated, such UTIs can travel up to the kidneys and cause pain and other complications, including sepsis in the worst cases. While most UTIs can be treated with antibiotics, some people still get them back. Therefore, cranberry products have long been recommended as a simple option with few side effects, although the last major review with results from 24 studies from 2012 showed no benefit from the products.
