In Quito, the workshop “Socialization of the training and certification of professionals in issues of addiction prevention and treatment” was held, organized by the Secretariat of the Inter-Institutional Committee for Comprehensive Prevention of the Socio-economic Phenomenon of Drugs with the support of the Quality Assurance Council of Higher Education (CES).

The event was held in person and online to share the national experience in the fields of drug demand reduction and promote the certification of professionals who work in the field of addiction prevention and treatment in the country by the Global Center International Accreditation and Certification (GCCC), a program of the Colombo Plan that promotes a professionalized workforce to reduce the demand for alcohol and other drugs in the world.

The meeting was attended by the Ecuadorian delegation headed by Cristina Núñez, representative of the Ministry of Public Health, as National Drug Commissioner; Becky Vaugh, director of the Global Center for Accreditation and Certification (GCCC); Carmita Álvarez, president of the Permanent Commission of Universities and Polytechnic Schools of the Council of Higher Education (CES) and Jim Breck, coordinator of the Office of Anti-Narcotics Affairs and Law Enforcement of the Embassy of the United States. Cristina Núñez, on behalf of José Ruales, Minister of Public Health and President of the Committee, thanked the US Embassy, ​​the CES and the GCCCC Center for the coordination to achieve the accreditation and certification process. “This meeting will make it possible to use better mechanisms for a comprehensive approach to the socioeconomic phenomenon of drugs.”

Likewise, Becky Vaughn, director of the GCCC, an international accreditation center, detailed the importance of adequate and certified training in drug use prevention and addiction treatment.

In the workshop, the public policy for the comprehensive prevention of the socio-economic phenomenon of drugs in the fields of health, education, work, community-family, cultural, recreational and sports, higher education, preventive alternative development and alternative development was exposed. comprehensive and sustainable, all local experiences of the technical and operational management of comprehensive prevention and the work carried out by the Inter-Institutional Committee on Drugs with an emphasis on demand reduction.
