On April 25, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh Nurlanbek Shakiev met with Chairman of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin. However, the press releases following the meetings at the Jogorku Kenesh and the State Duma are slightly different.

Both press releases contain a similar quotation from Shakiev about Kyrgyz-Russian relations.

“I would like to note the positive dynamics of the Kyrgyz-Russian relations, which are developing on the principles of alliance and strategic partnership. We are interested in further expansion and deepening of our cooperation in all areas,” Shakiev is quoted by the press service of the Jogorku Kenesh.

“There is a complete mutual understanding between our countries, which allows us to develop fruitful cooperation. The Kyrgyz Republic has always been and remains a reliable partner of Russia based on trust and long-term friendship,” the press service of the State Duma quotes the speaker of the Kyrgyz parliament.

Shakiyev with 9 more deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh is in Russia on an official visit. They went there against the backdrop of the upcoming official visit to the Russian Federation by President Sadyr Zhaparov, who will take part in the parade in Moscow on the Day of the USSR’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

This is not the first time Kyrgyz officials have spoken of developing friendly relations with Russia, whose army invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and continues to try to seize its territory.

The military invasion was condemned by Western countries and an unprecedented number of sanctions were applied against Russia. In addition, Western countries have repeatedly warned about the imposition of sanctions against countries that help Russia.

According to the UN, as of April 23, 2023, since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, more than 8,000 civilians have died and more than 14,000 have been injured.
