Each year, more than 66,000 people are infected with Sars viruses from bats in Southeast Asia. This striking observation, the result of a study published in Nature Communications in August 2022, perfectly illustrates the dramatic reversal that the study of zoonoses has experienced recently. Most specialists still thought, only ten years ago, that zoonoses were a rare event, limited by the barrier effect between species. “We are now all aware that many pathogens cross the animal-human barrier every day”underlines the Pr Pierre Tattevin, head of the infectious diseases department at the Rennes University Hospital.
