In the year of grace 1248, Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, entered his twenty-second year of reign although he was only 34 years old. He is about to leave for his first crusade to thank God for having saved him during a severe attack of dysentery four years earlier. On April 26, he inaugurates the Sainte-Chapelle which he intends to house the numerous relics of the Passion that he has collected over the past few years.

His first acquisition is the Holy Crown of Thorns. In 1237, he learned that the Emperor of Constantinople Baudouin II de Courtenay had placed it as a pawn with a Venetian merchant.
