488 journalists jailed this year; India among dangerous countries

Paris: As many as 488 journalists have been jailed around the world this year. This is the highest number in 25 years. Meanwhile, 46 journalists were killed in 2021 in different countries. This is the lowest murder rate since the data was collected. The figures were released by the RSF, an NGO working for media freedom. India is also one of the most dangerous countries for journalists to work for. China has the highest number of jailed journalists. China has detained 127 journalists this year.

The RSF considers Mexico and Afghanistan to be the most dangerous countries for journalism, according to the number of journalists killed. Six journalists were killed in both countries. Yemen and India are next in line. Four journalists were killed in the clashes, the RSF said in a statement. In Myanmar, Belarus and Hong Kong, the number of journalists imprisoned for repression of the media has increased by 20 percent this year. Most of the 46 journalists killed were premeditated, the report said.
