An American has been arrested at Sydney Airport. The lady was carrying an illegal item in her luggage, which must have surprised the customs officials: a 24-karat gold-plated handgun.

Australian customs officers arrested a 28-year-old American woman at Sydney Airport. They found a handgun plated with 24k gold in her luggage.

According to the Australian Border Force (ABF), the firearm was unregistered and the US citizen, who traveled from Los Angeles to Sydney, was not authorized to import or hold the firearm in Australia.

Australia has some of the world’s strictest gun ownership regulations and it is illegal to “deliberately” import firearms without prior authorisation. The maximum penalty for this offense in Australia is ten years imprisonment.

Sydney: Woman with golden gun in luggage released on bail

The woman appeared in a local court on Monday and was released on bail. The courts are now deciding on the status of your visa and your further stay in Australia. Depending on the outcome of the proceedings, she could be expelled from the country, according to the ABF.

As news channel CNN reports, Australia is often cited as an example of how strong gun control action can help reduce gun deaths. The country introduced sweeping gun control measures after a lone gunman killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania, in April 1996.

Sniper rifles and shotguns were banned, gun owner licensing tightened, and the remaining firearms registered to uniform national standards—along with a highly successful nationwide buyback and amnesty system.

Gun violence has reached record levels in the United States, the only country in the world where there are more civilian firearms than people. According to the Swiss-based independent research project Small Arms Survey (SAS), there are only about 14 firearms per 100 people in Australia, compared to 120 per 100 in the US.
