Marc Márquez’s kryptonite

Since he made his debut in MotoGP in 2013 and until 2019, Marc Márquez has not missed a single race and has won six premier class titles in seven years. He cemented his success with a style that had never been seen on a motorcycle and that at times pushed the limits of physics on two wheels. And despite his numerous falls that had accompanied him throughout his career, he always had the medical clearance to line up on the grid.

He was like a Superman on top of the bike, until the fateful race in Jerez came that changed everything. Actually, more than the injury itself, the problem came later. The rush to return and not disengage from the fight, together with bad luck, forced the champion from Cervera to spend more time in rehabilitation than on the bike, and even consider withdrawing before turning 30.

The fourth and final operation on the humerus seemed to mark a before and after, not only physically, but also mentally. And if after seeing the abyss so close, it was time to drive more with the head than with the heart? A single race in 2023 to prove that aggressiveness and risk are still part of Marc Márquez’s DNA.

Injuries are the bitterest part of motorcycling and what a rider knows they have to live with. Until the fateful injury to his right humerus, Márquez had missed just six races in twelve years, and four of them were in his debut season. Since Jerez 2020, Márquez has only contested 29 of the last 56 races, that is, he has not appeared in practically half of the races that have been held in the last three years.

Unfortunately for him, Marc Márquez has gotten used to visiting hospital operating rooms. And it is that he has already undergone eleven operations since he debuted in the championship in 2008. Four of them have been on his right arm, and from which he has definitely recovered; although the most delicate of all was at the beginning of 2012 to treat the palsy of the fourth right nerve with involvement of the superior oblique muscle of the right eye. An injury that has caused several episodes of diplopia or double vision.

Marc Márquez has been a rider used to pushing the limits on a MotoGP. This is how he has cemented a good part of his sporting successes, risking more than anyone and with a good dose of talent. His bike hasn’t helped him either, since in recent years the Honda has proven to be the most critical bike in the premier class and his riders have often topped the MotoGP crash rankings.

Saving the year of the pandemic (2020) where barely 14 grand prix were held, the increase in the number of races per season has also increased the number of crashes, figures that will skyrocket in 2023 with the inclusion of the sprint race of the Saturdays; in one of the most eventful beginnings of the year in memory. In just three races, five drivers have already missed at least one race through injury.
