Alfred Jones Brown, John Anthony Scasso and Joseph Scheps will be honored for their valuable contributions in celebrating the Heritage Day 2023which will be held throughout the country as every year in October.

Heritage Day is a deeply rooted tradition in Uruguayan society for more than thirty years. Cultural richness, popular acceptance and the quality of the activities promoted by the event have been increasing over time. In this year’s edition, under the slogan of “builders of schools and high schools”, it seeks to reaffirm the historical commitment of society and the State to education.

The material work dedicated to preschool, primary and secondary education in Uruguay configures an exceptional cultural heritage that deserves to be highlighted and valued. The aim is to develop heritage awareness and an attitude of care for all educational infrastructures.

Three professionals recognized for their enormous contributions to the architecture of education were honored in this year’s edition of Heritage Day: Alfredo Jones Brown, Juan Scasso and José Scheps. These architects represent fundamental periods of the production of educational architecture in the country.

Alfredo Jones Brown (1876-1950)trained at the Faculty of Mathematics and Related Branches of the University of the Republic, was the author of the Regulations for the Construction of School Buildings of the Ministry of Public Works and designer of important educational venues, such as the Germany School, the Enriqueta Compte Kindergarten and Riqué and the Alfredo Vázquez Acevedo Institute.

Juan Scasso (1892-1973), trained at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of the Republic, is known for its landmark works, such as the Centenario stadium. In addition, he did outstanding work in the area of ​​public spaces. He was honored on this occasion for the authorship of teaching projects such as the Experimental Schools in Las Piedras, Canelones, and in the Malvín neighborhood of Montevideo.

José Scheps (1920-2020)from his position in the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, projected works considered of enormous importance for the cultural heritage of the country, such as the Liceo Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga, the Polytechnic Institute and the building of the Catholic University.

The closing of the celebration of the Heritage Day will take place at the Armand Ugón High School in Colonia Valdensethe first built in the interior of the country, at the request of the aforementioned figure and later donated to the Uruguayan State.

This Heritage Day is a day to celebrate education, architects, the commitment of society and the Uruguayan State to education and the beautiful heritage we have, which is a fundamental support of our educational life. We must become aware of its importance and value it, since it is a legacy that we must care for and preserve for future generations.
