The Girona job market is slowing down

Employment levels in Girona’s counties are not off to a good start in 2023. The deceleration is accentuated in the demarcation and Girona closes the first quarter of the year with more people without work and an increase in the unemployment rate.

The province ended the first three months of the year with an unemployment rate of 11.29%, 2.75% more than at the end of last year and almost at the same level as in December 2021, still with some effects from the pandemic, when the rate was 11.22%.

The increase in the unemployed

According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the first quarter leaves 45,200 unemployed in the regions of Girona, 11,100 people more than three months agosince 2022 closed with 34,100 unemployed. To find a higher increase in the demarcation of Girona between the fourth quarter of one year and the first of the following year you have to go back to the beginning of 2012, more than ten years ago. Then the number of unemployed in Girona grew by 12,300 people, compared to December 2011.

The Active Population Survey (EPA) shows that the employment rate in Girona has also fallen, specifically by almost two points, from 56.22% to 54.24%. In the first quarter, 355,400 people were employed in the regions of Girona, while in December, the figure stood at 365,200 people with jobs. However, compared to the first quarter of last year, Girona remains above the figures recorded then. The first three months of this year ended with 900 more employed than a year ago.

The end of the Christmas campaign together with this deadlock before the start of the high season in terms of tourism has caused a significant drop in the number of workers in the service sectorwhich has gone from 269,200 in December to 255,400, that is, 13,800 fewer jobs.

In addition, construction also loses jobs, 400 in particular. On the other hand, agriculture and industry close the quarter creating employment. In the case of the primary with a hundred more workers, while industry closed the year with 59,500 workers and at the end of the first quarter they had increased to 63,800.

Inactive record

254,500 people in the Girona counties are inactive, that is to say they are of working age, but are not looking for work. This figure is the highest in the history series collected by the INEwhich goes back to the first quarter of 2002. Compared to December there are 4,200 more inactive.

Of this total, the main group are retired people or pensioners, despite the fact that they are still of working age, specifically 141,700 people. In second place, in this list, are students, who are 52,400 people, followed by people who carry out exclusively household tasks (44,800). Mainly, however, reaching the highest number in the history series is explained by the increase in students, since a year ago there were 11,000 fewer, that is to say, they have increased by 26.5% in the last twelve months

The figures in Catalonia and Spain

As for Catalonia, the unemployment rate has grown by almost half a point between January and March and has stood at 10.37%. The total number of unemployed has increased by 20,000 people, 5.17% more compared to the figures recorded at the end of 2022.

In Spain, the number of employed people in Spain has reached 20,452,800 people at the beginning of 2023, a drop of 11,100 workers (-0.05%) compared to the previous quarter. On the other hand, 368,000 jobs have been created in one year (+1.83%). The unemployed have risen by 103,800 people compared to the previous three months and the total has again surpassed the three million barrier. Unlike in Catalonia, in the State, unemployment has fallen by 47,000 people (-1.48%).
