The Port of Valencia, a pioneer in the world in operating with trucks powered by hydrogen

He Port of Valencia (spain) has become this Thursday, April 27, the first port in the world to use a 4×4 tractor unit powered by green hydrogen to move containers in its terminals.

Specifically, the 4×4 terminal tractor arrived last week at the port area, to carry out its first test at the Valencia Terminal Europa, from the Grimaldi Group, under the supervision of the team of inspectors from the European H2Ports project.

It is the first unit of this class that is powered by hydrogen, which has been developed by Atena, a research and technology center made up of universities, research institutes and private companies based in the Italian region of Campania.

More specifically, the tractor is the first of the two prototypes that will be tested for two years at the Valencian site. The second unit, a hydrogen reachstacker that Hyster is developing, is expected to arrive at the site in the coming weeks for testing at the MSC terminal.

After carrying out the first tests, the president of the Port Authority, Joan Calabuig, mentioned his goal of total decarbonisation by 2030: “We are only at the beginning of our commitment to introduce hydrogen as a central element of mobility”.

Meanwhile, Antonio Crespo, director of Valencia Terminal Europa, has commented that “it has been a very long job, almost two years with this project, with many people involved. Seeing it working today, and with excellent quality and safety parameters, is something to be very proud of”.
