The government in Holland expects the number of asylum seekers who will arrive in the Netherlands this year it will be significantly higher than previously thought. About 70,000 people will likely apply, NOS says.
Undersecretary Eric van der Burg has sent the House text saying that at least 49,000 asylum seekers will arrive in the Netherlands this year, but that number is likely to be between 67,000 and 77,000. The undersecretary says the number could continue to rise.
There is not only a sharp increase in the number of asylum applications in the Netherlands, says the Undersecretary: the same is happening in the rest of Europe as well. The numbers indicate that the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers will need 77,100 reception places by 2024 and that the backlog of assessments to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) will increase by tens of thousands of applications.
Housing shortages and lagging bureaucracy risk jeopardizing the situation, says NOS: Van der Burg announces in his letter that he wants to do something about the number of approved asylum applications as soon as possible. Furthermore, the VVD politician wants to do everything to make Holland “as unattractive as possible for asylum seekers”.
The government wants to intervene on asylum seekers, migrant workers and international students with ad hoc measures.
