The Venezuelan opponent Juan Guaidohas asked the international community to protect all Venezuelans who resist or are at the mercy of the Chavista dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro, as well as for the millions of people who have had to flee the country. In his speech to the US media in Miami, Guaidó also called to support Venezuela’s return to democracy with “actions”, not just “communiqués”.

Guaidó also explained that he had to leave the Colombia of the satrap Gustavo Petro, an “ally” of the “dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro”, due to the “threats of deportation” that the Colombian foreign minister, Álvaro Leyva, did to him, whom he called a “liar” on several occasions.

Regarding President Joe Biden’s policy towards Venezuela, the opponent pointed out that it is positive that the White House has affirmed that the US needs to see “concrete steps by the Maduro regime so that it fulfills its commitments to negotiate in good faith and help the transition to democracy”. In this sense, Guaidó also insisted that sanctions are necessary “tools”as is the International Criminal Court, which prosecuted Maduro for human rights violations.

However, as criticized by Guaidó, the Inter-American Democratic Charter is is currently “poetry.” He also pointed out that “sanctions do not depend on us Venezuelans, but we need them” because “Maduro’s good faith cannot be depended on” to release political prisoners, hold free elections and recover rights and freedoms.

Regarding the dialogue between the government and the opposition in Mexico, currently interrupted, he said that “any initiative that helps a peaceful solution in Venezuela” is good in principle.

Before answering questions at the press conference, Guaidó made a statement in which he twice stated that “there is no political or human reason for a dictatorship to kidnap a person.”

A movie escape

Guaidó recounted some unknown details about his departure from Venezuela, which was prohibited by court order. Arrived in Bogotá by road after “threats” prevented him from taking a flight from Cucutá to the Colombian capital. “It is the only ticket that I had bought,” stressed Guaidó, who also denied that he had a ticket to travel from Bogotá to Miami, as the Colombian authorities have said.

He traveled to the US with a expired venezuelan passport and with the help of the embassy of that country in Bogotá, as he said before indicating that in Colombia there is a regulation that admits these Venezuelan documents as valid up to five years after their expiration.

In Bogotá -he pointed out- he had agreed meetings with representatives of France, Canada and the United States, and in Miami he feels “embraced, protected and well received”, although he feels concern for his wife, his two daughters and his work team that they are “threatened”.

He also said that he wants to return to Venezuela when he has “security” to do so, but before that, he will hold a meeting in Washington next week. meetings with members of Congress. His goal is to have contacts with President Joe Biden’s Administration, but he did not mention anything specific.

Likewise, it seeks “support” so that the next elections in Venezuela they are not “like those of 2018 nor like the last ones in Nicaragua”, a country along with Cuba mentioned several times during the press conference.
