GOMA – Accused of inefficiency since his arrival in North Kivu at the head of the regional force of the East Africa Community (EAC), Major General Jeff Nyagah has just resigned on April 27, 2023.

The latter mentions attempts to intimidate his security in his residence by mercenaries who had placed surveillance devices, flew drones and carried out physical surveillance of his residence. The Major General also denounces well-orchestrated negative media campaigns and financed aimed at his personality.

The senior Kenyan officer also refers to the conflicting relations between the regional force and the Congolese authorities. According to him, we wanted to make his position as head of the regional force a rotating function, with a change of commander every three months.

“This situation is also aggravated by the fact that the DRC government does not cover administrative costs, including force headquarters, staff offices, accommodation, as well as salaries of civilian staff” , he concludes, believing that this “permanent frustration” has “made his mission untenable”.

Contacted, the entourage of President Félix Tshisekedi confirms this departure, while ensuring that he has requested it beforehand.

The resignation of Jeff Nyagah comes as the withdrawal of the M23 remains fragile and the prospects for ending the conflict still seem uncertain. The DRC remains officially hostile to any negotiations with the M23 rebels. The latter have already announced that, without a guarantee of direct dialogue with Kinshasa, they will refuse to confine themselves.
