Dr. Francisco Pérez, Undersecretary of Health Surveillance, Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador and as Secretary of the Inter-institutional Committee for Comprehensive Prevention of the socioeconomic phenomenon of drugs, participated in the III international seminar of the Program of Cooperation between Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union on Drugs (COPOLAD) where new approaches and lines of action against the drug problem were analyzed.
The meeting on “Drugs, vulnerabilities and urban territories” took place from April 24 to 26, 2023, in the city of Fortaleza (Brazil). During his participation, Dr. Pérez analyzed and presented several of the actions carried out by the country to promote the prevention of drug use, and reduce vulnerability to the production of illicit crops within the framework of Preventive Alternative Development, together with Daniela Onofre delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
COPOLAD is a cooperation program financed by the European Union that combines bi-regional collaboration spaces, with direct technical assistance interventions to meet needs at the national level and promote transformative and innovative interventions in the field of controlled substances.
The event was attended by representatives of drug agencies and technicians from countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union, including Ecuador. The main objective of the seminar was to share experiences and outline proposals for territorial intervention and approaches to prevent drug consumption and micro-trafficking.
This meeting allowed the participants to share good practices and lessons to deal with this problem, as well as to identify strategies and tools to prevent drug use and reduce the associated risks.
Ecuador’s participation in this type of meeting is an example of the importance that the national government gives to actions in the area of drug use prevention and the implementation of effective public policies in this area.
