Indigenous villages from Guatemala denounced this Thursday the construction of infrastructure projects that they have stripped of their lands and have a negative impact on their communities.

For example, the Mexican company Marhnos SA and Guatemalan oligarchic sectors profited and deprived territories for the construction of the Palin-Escuintla highwaywhose concession contract will end on April 30 and has claimed the lives of hundreds of human beings and animals.

The authority of the indigenous mayor of Palín, Alida Vincent, asserted that “in this town, this highway, this contract, only it came to deteriorate the social fabric; because through this supposed development what they have brought are investments that come to enslave the population”.

Vincent also recalled that there are “thousands of people dead” and? «In the journey from the beginning to the end we are not going to find the name of a single person; because, when there have been accidents, families come together, place the cross with the name of the person and this company, disrespectful of memory of the people who have died, remove all the crosses and that is a great lack of respect”.

According to official sources, the concession was granted to the Mexican company Marhnos SA which, for 25 years, received $283,717,949leaving the State a royalty of just 2,693,000.

Other community authorities explained that during that period “Businessmen received, profited and they filled their pockets with money and for the people there was nothing. They brought us more poverty, more hunger. «We no longer agree that they continue chargingWe want them to free the way in this territory”they denounced.

Recently, the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammatteiannounced that as of May 1 the toll collection. However, it is intended to privatize a new section of the highway, towards Puerto Quetzal; despite the fact that the population rejected it through a neighborhood consultation.
