Maybe you don’t remember Marty McFly’s greatest aspiration, and maybe you’re not even familiar with the vision of David Hasselhoff trying to tame his yellow pickup truck. we don’t know the Toyota Hilux GR Sport like the 4×4 that teenagers used to drive to high school, but rather for the badge of being one of the toughest cars in the world. But you don’t have to travel to the future to talk about reliability. In fact, Top Gear tried to wipe it off the face of the Earth and failed.

But that is not our intention either. We are testing the GR Sport version to see if, in addition to its tough image, we also have a vehicle to pick up the kids or get around town. The price? A high price for a car in this segment.

Exterior

The grille takes up a large percentage of the tall, imposing front end, but there are also new headlights that may feature LED technology and larger fog lights integrated into the bumper.

Surprisingly, the underbody section is body-coloured, when on this type of vehicle there are usually plastic reinforcements on the underbody. They show up in the generous wheel arches, which house 17-inch wheels fitted with off-road tires, as you’d expect on a pickup truck.

Interior

It’s been a long time since pickup trucks stopped being basic vehicles in terms of technology and bad finishes to match other passenger cars. In the case of the Hilux, it would be quite updated thanks to the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system.

Controlled by an 8-inch central screen on top-of-the-line models, such as this GR Sport, and it comes with all kinds of features. It feels good, but it’s not one of the most accurate screens on the market. It’s not the biggest either, as the recently launched Ford Ranger has a 12-inch screen in portrait position.

Motor

With the latest update, Toyota Hilux’s mechanical range has expanded. The 150hp 2.4-litre diesel engine we tested a while ago was joined by a more capable turbodiesel engine found in the GR Sport.

The 2.8 liter four-cylinder engine produces 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque, an impressive number. It can only be combined with a six-speed automatic transmission and the all-wheel drive system that is standard on the GR Sport. A manual gearbox with the same ratios is available on entry-level models.
