Beer bottles: Dispute about the deposit

When bottle collectors stroll along the Main in Frankfurt, they look out for disposable plastic bottles and cans. They are light, you can collect them in bags without the bags becoming too heavy. The deposit machine in the supermarket dispenses 25 cents per bottle. For example, anyone who has collected 40 cans will receive a 10 euro deposit credit. The old brown beer bottle, on the other hand, is rather unpopular with deposit collectors. It is significantly heavier and the deposit machine only dispenses 8 cents per bottle. 40 glass bottles are difficult to carry and only bring a deposit for 3.20 euros. So better leave it alone?

Most people agree that it doesn’t make ecological sense. Many in the industry say that the deposit on the good old standard beer bottle has long since had to be increased. “The deposit has not been changed for more than 50 years,” explains Roland Demleitner, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Private Breweries, while everything else has become more expensive. “We were already thinking about increasing the deposit when the currency was converted from the Deutsche Mark to the euro more than 20 years ago,” explains Lothar Ebbertz, the general manager of the Bavarian Brewers’ Association: “Many breweries were in favor of it back then, it would have been a good opportunity but in the end the industry couldn’t come to an agreement at the time.”
