Without his smartwatch he might already be dead!

Again and again Apple devices are used for their faulty emergency call alarms smiled at. The measurement of his health data via the Apple Watch may now have saved the life of the American Ken Counihan. With the gadget, the man from Cleveland noticed in good time that his oxygen level in the blood had dropped, he reports TV-Sender „News 5“.

Counihan, who has two children and three grandchildren, like many others, uses his Apple Watch to track sleep, workouts and other health indicators. “I’m very active and like to keep track of what I’m doing,” he told the TV station.

However, last October, the watch’s Health app suddenly warned him that his breathing rate was significantly increased. Trusting that the smartwatch indicated a mild illness and feeling dizzy, he went home and rested. But his wife insisted that he also go to the doctor. The doctor X-rayed his patient and prescribed medication for bronchitis.

In the evening, however, the clock sounded the alarm again and indicated that something was wrong. This time it was blood oxygen: “My blood oxygen, which is usually around 95 and higher, started to drop to a mid 80 percent level,” he says. An alarming value, because if the oxygen saturation in the capillary blood is below 90 percent, this can have serious consequences such as a stroke.

Counihan’s family then took him straight to the emergency room. Thanks to the data provided by the Apple Watch and additional measurements in the clinic, a computer tomography was carried out directly. And here the doctors found a blood clot in the lungs. After being prescribed a blood thinner, the sprightly pensioner is now doing much better.

According to Counihan, the doctors made it clear that without the warning from the Apple Watch and the timely care he received in the clinic, he would probably not have survived the next morning.
