Police mega-operation involved raiding 24 properties and two prisons in four regions of the country.

Intelligence agents and members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) dismantled the alleged criminal organization “Los Dragones Rojos”, dedicated to extortion and collection of quotas from businessmen and merchants, in a mega-operation carried out simultaneously in the regions of Lima, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Puno.

The police action resulted in the arrest of 10 alleged members of said group, which operated under the facade of a civil construction union and would be led by a subject identified as alias “Oliver” or “Fran”.

According to police information, “Los Dragones Rojos” operated in the provinces of Chepén and Pacasmayo sending envelopes with threatening messages to their victims and leaving dynamite and other explosives at the doors of their homes when they did not comply with their demands.

The mega-operation included the search of 24 properties located in the provinces of Cañete, in Lima; Chiclayo, in Lambayeque; and Trujillo, Chepén and Pacasmayo, in La Libertad, as well as the cell in the La Capilla (Puno) and El Milagro (La Libertad) prisons.

During the police action, two magic shotguns and seven 12 and 16 caliber cartridges were also seized. S/ 6,300 in cash, 15 cell phones, and six credit cards were also seized. The detainees and the material found were transferred to the PNP La Noria Police Station, in the city of Trujillo, for the respective proceedings.

The different interventions had the joint participation of 80 agents of the Division of Investigation of High Complexity Crimes (Diviac) of the National Police, as well as squads of the III Macro Police Region La Libertad, the II Macro Police Region Lambayeque, the X Macro Police Region Puno and the Police Region Lima. Members of the General Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior also participated in the mega-operation.

The criminal group, which initially called itself “The Always Safe Red Dragons”, was dismantled twice. The first intervention took place in March 2015, when they called themselves “The New Red Dragons” and 14 of their members were captured. The second capture was in June 2018, when 23 of its members were arrested.
