  • The President of the Government celebrates the approval of the first Spanish vaccine against the coronavirus

  • Bet on continuing to strengthen the health system and remember that “a country without science is a country without a future”

“The Hipra vaccine It is a historical milestone for science and research in our country“. These are the words that the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, has used to define the first injection against covid-19 devised, tested and produced in Spain. “The approval of this vaccine comes with a great emotional charge, because it reminds us of everything we have experienced during a pandemic that we are beginning to leave behind thanks to science“, Sánchez highlighted during a press appearance held this Monday from the pharmaceutical facilities in Amer (Girona).

Sánchez stressed the need to continue strengthening the health system and recalled that “a country without science is a country without a future”. “Weakening public health is the worst decision any ruler can make”, the president has indicated, adding that “sooner or later, the bill ends up being paid”.

Hipra injection received the final approval of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on March 30. After examining in detail the results of the clinical trials of this formula, the highest European health authority has authorized the use of the Spanish vaccine as a booster dose against covid-19. This formula may be supplied to everyone over the age of 16 who has previously been vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna. The final distribution of these injections (that is, who and when will receive the injections) will depend on the criteria established by each of the recipient countries.

“Hipra’s vaccine is a historic milestone for science and research in our country”

The European Commission has signed a purchase contract to purchase up to 250 million doses of this drug. As they explain from Hipra, at the moment there are at least fourteen European countries interested in having the Spanish vaccine (In addition to other states in Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia that are also negotiating the purchase of these injections). Spain, for its part, already has insured at least 3.2 million doses of the immunization produced in Catalonia.

Hipra’s vaccine will be marketed under the name ‘Bimervax’. According to the spokespersons of the Catalan company, the doses of this vaccine will cost between 7 and 9.75 euros per unit (a figure much lower than the 15 euros that each Pfizer puncture costs and the more than 20 that Moderna’s are worth). Spain will be one of the countries that will receive the dose at the lowest price for the Government’s investment in the development of this project, which has also had the participation of research groups and public hospitals from all over the country.

The Spanish vaccine, unlike its predecessors, is based on a different type of technology to stimulate the immune system against the coronavirus responsible for covid-19. Its promoters define it as a “new generation vaccine” that “responds to the current needs of the pandemic.” This formula has demonstrated high efficacy rates against all coronavirus variants detected to date. Clinical trials suggest that its use as a booster dose in people who have previously been vaccinated with other formulas generates “a strong and lasting immune response”.
