The stage in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano is ready for the 33rd edition of the May Day Concert in Rome, promoted by CGIL, CISL and UIL and organized by iCompany, directed by Fabrizio Guttuso. The name of Luciano Ligabue is added to the Concertone line up who, 17 years after his last participation (2006), returns to the stage of May Day in Rome, in the wake of the new single “Riderai” which anticipates the new album in released in the autumn and waiting for the two stadium events on 5 July at the San Siro Stadium in Milan and on 14 July at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Nine hours of live music and lyrics with around 50 artists representing current and future Italian music: an event broadcast live on Rai3 (from 3.15pm to 00.15am with a break from 7pm to 8pm for the news editions), Rai Radio 2 , RaiPlay and Rai Italia. “Italy is a democratic republic founded on work” is the slogan that CGIL, CISL and UIL have chosen for Workers’ Day 2023. Thus the three confederal trade unions have decided to pay homage to our Constitutional Charter, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary since its entry into force, dedicating the May 1 2023 edition to it. Work is recognized as the first fundamental principle of the Italian Republic, a personal right and a social duty that must be guaranteed and valued.

The artistic line of the May 1st Concert 2023 develops around the concept “Generation #1M2023” marking a new stage in the musical narrative that the Concertone has been carrying on for some time. A transgenerational event that, in recent years, has been able to intercept and tell the music that is about to reach the ears of the national public. A stage, a square and an audience that annually showcase the emporium of Italian music.

The line up includes Aurora, the only international guest, Luciano Ligabue, Emma, Lazza, Coma_Cose, Geolier, Carl Brave, Tananai, Francesco Gabbani, Ariete, Mr. Rain, Piero Pelù with Alborosie, Matteo Paolillo, Johnson Righeira, Mara Sattei, Il Tre, Baustelle, Levante, Aiello, Rocco Hunt, Bnkr44, Gaia, Alfa, Giuse The Lizia, Fulminacci, Mille, Neima Ezza, Rose Villain, Wayne, Ciliari, Tropea, Napoleone, Uzi Lvke, L’Orchestraccia, Epoque, Ginevra, Serendipity, Paolo Benvegnù to which are added the winners of the 1Mnext Contest Etta, Mannini, Still Charles and the winner of the contest “Road safety in music” Hermes. Opening act from 2.00 pm with Leo Gassmann, Iside, Savana Funk, Camilla Magli, Wepro.

The voices of the artists who will perform on the May Day stage are joined by the speeches of the science communicator Carlo Rovelli, the writer and playwright Stefano Massini and the singer-songwriter Avinci. For the sixth consecutive edition, Ambra Angiolini will conduct the Concertone. In the history of the event, no one has ever conducted it for so long. To support her there will be Biggio, actor and TV presenter, member of the comic duo I soliti idioti and next to Fiorello in the Viva Rai 2 program currently on air.

The 2023 edition of the May Day Concert is therefore also enriched by a pre-show which, around 2.00 pm, will welcome the public in Piazza San Giovanni by hosting performances by Leo Gassmann, Iside, Savana funk and Camilla Magli.

The 3 winners of 1Mnext, the May Day Contest dedicated to emerging artists, will also perform in the first part of the Concertone. Out of more than a thousand members, the quality jury composed of Massimo Bonelli (artistic director of the May Day Concert, president of the jury), Anna Rampinelli (Senior PM Warner Music Italy), Irma Ciccarelli (Rockol), Lucia Stacchiotti (iCompany) and Enrico Capuano (Songwriter), chose Etta, Maninni and Still Charles. The absolute winner will be proclaimed on the Concertone stage. Furthermore, having finished fourth just one point from the top three, Wepro will open the pre-show of the Concertone 2023 at 2.00 pm. Hermes, winner of the fifth edition of the “Road Safety in Music” contest, will also perform in the first part of the event.

In collaboration with Siae – Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori, the presenters of Rai Radio 2 and the many guests protagonists of the event will take turns in the backstage position, for a parallel story with interviews and exclusive content, live and on social media. The network directed by Paola Marchesini will offer the report, live on the radio and in video on digital terrestrial channel 202 and tivùsat, of a day of great celebration, warmed up by the energy of live music. It starts with the afternoon appointment, from 16.00, in the company of Diletta Parlangeli and LaMario; while the story of the evening, starting at 20.00, is entrusted to Carolina di Domenico and Elena Di Cioccio.

Then a gift from Rai Radio 2 not only for listeners and for the public who watch the radio on TV, but for the whole of Piazza San Giovanni: from 7.00 pm, during the pause of live TV, from the May Day stage, the Ema Stokholma’s DJ set. Rai Radio 2 and Siae will make the story travel and the square dance. Rai Radio 2 is also available in video on Digital Terrestrial channel 202 and tivùsat, in live streaming on RaiPlay and RaiPlay Sound.

The entire event will also be available on RaiPlay, both live and on demand. Live clips of the entire concert will be extracted as well as clips of the interviews with the singers visible in full on the Rai Radio 2 TV channel on RaiPlay. Rai Italia has the task of proposing the entire concert from Piazza San Giovanni to the world, dividing it into two tranches. The notes of the May Day stage will arrive on five continents following an ad hoc schedule that will follow the different time zones.

Again this year Rai Public Utility will guarantee full accessibility to the May 1st Concert: starting at 3.00 pm – and for the entire duration of the Concert – the subtitles made live by Saxa Rubra’s studio will be available on Teletext page 777; starting from 20.00 the audio description – which can be activated on the dedicated audio channel – and streamed on Rai Play, will also allow blind people to know the details related to the lights, the scenography, the clothes, the movements of the artists and conductors on stage.

Also starting at 20.00, the accessible live broadcast will begin on Rai Play with subtitles and Lis, created by the Rai studio in via Teulada. In particular, a team of 6 performers – including a young deaf performer – and 2 interpreters will take turns to translate the conductors’ and guests’ lines into Lis and interpret, again in Italian Sign Language, all the songs proposed on stage at Piazza San Giovanni, transmitting, through the movements of the body, emotions and musical rhythm and offering an enjoyable artistic show not only for the deaf public, but for a wider audience of spectators, who have learned to appreciate the expressive power of the Lis. Accessibility in Lis will also be guaranteed in Piazza San Giovanni – always starting from 20.00 – by posting the image of the interpreters and performers on the side led walls of the stage and thus guaranteeing full accessibility.
