During pregnancy, it is normal to have to adapt our diet to the energy needs of our body and in such a way that we avoid those foods that may a risk to the baby.

Well, maybe taking these changes a little further could maximize the positive effects for our body. This is what a new study published in the scientific journal Fertility and Sterilitywhich has concluded that a pre-conception and early pregnancy diet rich in vegetables, among other elements, reduces the risk of spontaneous abortion.

Benefits of a balanced diet

The authors of the work, attached to the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) analyzed 20 previous investigations that dealt with the eating habits of mothers in the previous months and after conception, in order to elucidate how they were related to the risk of miscarriage.

This method showed that, indeed, there is evidence that supports the notion that a diet rich in fruits, vegetablesshellfish, dairy products, eggs, and grains would reduce the risk of miscarriage when maintained from shortly before to months after conception.

The conclusion is not too surprising if we take into account that these foods are part of a typical healthy dietand previous studies have already found that a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is important during pregnancy.

Reductions of up to 61%

Specifically, this review found that a high intake of fruit is associated with up to 61% lower risk of experiencing miscarriage compared to a low intake. A high consumption of vegetables would reduce the risk by up to 41%; diets high in dairy, 35%; in cereals, 33% and shellfish and eggs up to 19%.

Overweight

Conversely, diets high in foods considered unhealthy, especially a diet too high in processed foods, is associated with up to twice the risk of miscarriage spontaneous.

Miscarriage is a relatively common complication of pregnancy, occurring in up to one in six cases. For this reason, it is especially important to find strategies that allow reduce risks as much as possiblein order to avoid as much as possible the negative impact on the physical and mental health of women.
