In the city of Nantes in western France, protesters collected garbage cans and set them on fire, smashed shop windows, and police fired tear gas in response.

In the city of Marseille, a group of more than a hundred people briefly took over a luxury hotel near the old port, only to be evicted by police.

The interior ministry put the total number of demonstrators at 782,000, including 112,000 in the capital, Paris, but the CGT union said the figure was three times higher: 500,000 in Paris and 2.3 million across the country.
