Almost every patient with a chronic disease at some point asks if the treatment can not be stopped. Those with epilepsy are no exception. Attempts to escape, however, need to be well thought out and planned.

Antiseizure drugs completely suppress seizures in 65–85% of epilepsy patients, but at the expense of various side effects in nine out of ten cases. In other words: Patients take a long-term medication with many side effects in order to prevent mostly rare events. Studies have shown that the quality of life of seizure-free patients is significantly better when they are not taking anticonvulsants, reported Prof. Dr. Bernhard Steinhoff, Epilepsy Center of Diakonie Kork. However, it should also be noted that every second or third patient has seizures again after stopping the medication.
