The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has become aware of a fraudulent press release posted on social networks giving recommendations to WAMU credit institutions on damaged FCFA banknotes.

The BCEAO denies this information and specifies that this press release does not come from its Services.

It therefore invites credit institutions, the media and the public to be extremely vigilant and to refer only to the official channels of communication of the Issuing Institute.

In this regard, it recalls that all its press releases are published on its website www.bceao.int, as well as, where appropriate, in the written and audiovisual press of the Member States of the West African Monetary Union (UMOA).

The BCEAO reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings against the perpetrators and accomplices of acts and messages likely to undermine the monetary signs having legal tender in the Member States of the WAMU (Benin, Burkina, Côte d’ Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo).

The Central Bank reminds the public that the damaged monetary signs of its issue are exchangeable at its counters open in the agencies of each WAMU Member State, and specifies that the rules and conditions of exchange of these values remain unchanged.

It encourages people who hold mutilated, damaged or stained coins and banknotes to exchange them at its counters or at the counters of banks established in the WAMU.

Finally, it specifies that the ticket exchange service is free.
