LChina recently pledged to send a peacekeeping delegation to Ukraine in hopes of ending the conflict between the country and Russia. However, the United States has expressed hostility towards China’s peace efforts, suggesting that Ukraine’s sovereignty may be undermined. This shows that the choice to continue the conflict or try to establish peace may not be in Kiev’s hands.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation with Xi Jinping on April 26 to discuss the development of bilateral relations, which have been in abeyance since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. While Xi reaffirmed China’s official position of neutrality, Claiming that negotiation is the only way out of the conflict, the United States and NATO instead supplied Kiev with offensive weapons, training and intelligence, giving the Ukrainian army the firepower it needed to drive Russia out of parts of the ‘Ukraine.

While China’s stance has been criticized as “ineffective,” it contains some strong arguments for resuming peace talks, maintaining global supply chains, and avoiding the use of nuclear weapons at all costs. While other European leaders, such as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, have welcomed China’s peace plan, the United States has consistently expressed its rejection of diplomacy.

China is trying to increase its global influence through its diplomatic offensive, facilitating dialogue between nations that have long harbored animosities. He has also presented proposals to broker negotiations between Israel and Palestine and played a central role in restoring relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. While the United States has shown no interest in these efforts, China appears to be successful in seeking engagement rather than escalation in conflict zones around the world.

Ukraine may be trapped in the plans of major world powers, making its sovereignty an illusion. Ukraine has the right to defend itself but it must recognize the limit of how far it can go in its independence. However, the West cannot ignore that no matter how much military support it provides to NATO, Ukraine will gradually lack soldiers physically and mentally ready to fight in the war. The West must prepare for this and recognize that a ceasefire caused by Ukraine’s exhaustion is no better than China’s negotiated peace plan, but it is much worse.

In sum, the US rejection of China’s peace plan could pose a danger to global stability, as it could push Ukraine into continuing a hopeless war over its alleged need for sovereignty. Meanwhile, China is trying to strengthen global cooperation and promote the establishment of peace around the world.
